Itchy, raised, red bumps—who wants them? There’s nothing worse than waking up with something mysterious on your skin, and it can cause all sorts of panic. In summer, the biggest cause of unknown rashes is the heat, which can leave tiny, red bumps that look clear and make you itch.
According to New York City-based dermatologist Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, M.D., these bumps are caused by sweat trapped in your pores. “Make sure to dry off when you’re perspiring, particularly at the gym, and wear breathable cotton fabrics that are open and airy,” suggests Dr. Alexiades. A lot of sunscreens, perfumes, and body lotions can also cause a rash when in contact with a high temperatures, so be sure to keep an eye on the ingredient list. And don’t forget to exfoliate your skin, as dead skin cells can clog your pores just as much as sweat can.
